一 | The veteran South Korean actor Lee Soon-jae died early on November 25 at the age of 91. Family and close friends surrounded the actor at the time of his death. This marks an end to a decorated career which lasted over 70 years. His work set the stage for what would become contemporary Korean theatre, film and television. The screen veteran was born in 1934 in Hoeryong, North Hamgyong Province. He moved to Seoul at the age of 4. He pursued his studies at Seoul National University. He first stepped into acting through theatre after being inspired by Lauren Olivier’s performance in Hamlet. This was largely due to the influx of European films. He officially made his debut in the 1950s with the play Beyond the Horizon. This set the foundation for a career which defined Korean performing arts for years to come. Lee Soon-jae quickly became known as one of Korea’s “first generation” actors. After making a name in theatre, he slowly transitioned to film and television in the 1960s. What made him a household name was his range. Among his most loved projects is the sitcom Unstoppable High Kick! He also went on to do critically acclaimed films like Late Blossom and Good Morning President. He also starred in dramas like Lee San, Dear My Friends, The Red Sleeve and Heo Jun. Veteran actor Lee Soon Jae passed away today at the age 91. The legendary artist also set to appear on stage in 2024 with the production of Waiting for Godot. However, his health concerns forced him to step back from the project. His accomplishments were consistently acknowledged, most notably when he became the oldest recipient of the highest honor at the 2024 KBS Acting Awards. He continued to inspire admiration throughout the business even after abandoning a stage production and stopping work on the drama Dog Talk owing to deteriorating health. His passing prompted a flurry of tributes from across the country. He was recognised as a great star of South Korea’s cultural and artistic community by the South Korean President Lee Jae-myung.
